About Rome
Rome grew from an ancient settlement on the Tiber into the centre of the Roman world and later the capital of modern Italy. Its historic core preserves monuments from antiquity through the Baroque within a living city.
Streets and squares repeatedly reveal earlier layers: temples became churches, ancient structures were reused and Renaissance palaces stand beside archaeological sites. Much of the centre is best understood on foot.
